What happens in an assessment

A Driving Advisor and an Occupational Therapist will conduct the assessment. It will start with an initial consultation and any relevant cognitive exercises to determine their individual requirements. A physical evaluation may also be required to identify any limitations that could affect the individual's ability to operate standard vehicle controls, and to determine possible adaptations that would enable them to drive more safely or comfortably.

They will be required by law to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres. Any other visual impairment may require further investigation.

The drive is designed to gauge their reaction to standard driving conditions. The route is designed to ensure that they are in complete control of the vehicle, aware of their surroundings, and able to make safe decisions.

At the end of the assessment, we will discuss and advise on the next steps. Wherever possible, we will make recommendations to improve either vehicle control or technique, enabling them to return to or continue driving safely.

How long does the assessment take?

They should allow approximately two hours for the assessment, although actual driving time will be around 45 minutes. This enables them to progress through each stage of the evaluation at their own pace.

Following the assessment, a full comprehensive report will be written, which you will receive 10-14 working days after the evaluation.

How to book

RDAC is a charity, and unfortunately, our grant funding does not cover the cost of an assessment. To be sustainable, we do need to charge a fee; the referral cost is £300.00.  We will invoice or accept payment once the client or patient has been booked for an assessment.

Refund Policy

If your client cancels their booking within two working days, we cannot offer a refund. If they wish to rebook the assessment, the full amount will be chargeable.

If your client cancels more than 2 days before their booking date and wishes to rebook, there will be no charge. However, if they want to close your referral completely, you will be charged a £20 administration fee.
