Accessible Transport
We can support you in finding different ways to travel accessibly, whether for longer or shorter distances, as a passenger in a car or independently on public transport, using mobility solutions such as powered wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
RDAC provides a range of ways to explore accessible travel. You can attend one of our Accessibility Open Days, where you can see a range of adaptations for passengers, including mobility wheelchairs and scooters, and find more information about accessible transport for longer distances.
Assessments for Passenger Access, Powered Wheelchairs or Motor Scooters
We understand that changes in a person's health can often affect their ability to drive or walk. An access assessment will look at your individual needs in more detail. An Occupational Therapist will talk through potential options and support you in making choices most useful to you. We aim to ensure that this process is as straightforward and accessible as possible for everyone. Safety when travelling is essential, and we strive to help you get back to independent travel.
When you call to book an assessment or attend an open day, we can answer any questions you may have so you feel reassured before visiting a centre for your evaluation.
What happens in an assessment?
The details of the evaluation will depend on your mobility needs and the type of mobility support you require. The Occupational Therapist will begin with an initial consultation, followed by any relevant physical mobility or cognitive exercises to assess your requirements as a passenger or to operate the standard controls of a powered wheelchair or mobility scooter.
Suppose you are looking to use a powered wheelchair or mobility scooter. In that case, we will support you on a route in the local area to ensure that you are in complete control of the equipment, aware of your surroundings, and able to make safe decisions.
You should allow approximately 1 hour for the assessment, which will enable you to proceed through each stage at your own pace. At the end of the evaluation, we will discuss and advise on what you should do next, and a comprehensive report will be written, which you will receive within 10-14 working days.
Wherever possible, we will make recommendations to improve your control, suggest the most suitable equipment, and provide details of any available financial support.
How to book with RDAC?
RDAC is a charity, and unfortunately, our grant funding does not cover the cost of an assessment. To be sustainable, we do need to charge a fee, apart from open days, which you can attend for free. If you are referred through the NHS, the referral cost is £75.00; you will need a health professional to do this for you.
A self-referral incurs a fee of £150, which will be charged when we contact you to arrange an assessment following the submission of this form. If you cancel your booking within two working days, we cannot offer a refund. If you cancel more than two working days before your booking date, we charge an administration fee of £20.
Get Involved With RDAC
As a charity, RDAC relies on grants and donations to fund the critical service it provides. We are always grateful for the support of the public, and if you would like to donate, we ensure that contributions go directly to front-line services.
